Michigan, today, launched its expanded Medicaid plan meant to provide health insurance to hundreds and thousands of low-income adults.

The state today kicked off the enrollment for Healthy Michigan that stretched Medicaid eligibility to people making up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

Gov. Rick Snyder is hopeful of a smooth launch. Snyder had fought hard to convince fellow Republicans in the Legislature to vote for the Medicaid expansion under the contentious federal health care law. The governor says he expects 320,000 residents to sign up in the first 12 months.

The Department of Community Health and Department of Human Services directors will officially open enrollment at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the DHS Conner Service Center in Detroit.
