Archer in poverty, disgrace to the hosts of common wealth games

A pathetic story is there behind most sports personalities who have got laurels and have been neglected. Well the case excludes cricket, and other popular sports.

Sometimes abject poverty drives people to the brinks of life. There have been several instances across the country of persons facing such delirious situations. And the sports persons are not above it too. Like the army, even sports persons fight for the honors of the country and feel elated to represent the `tiranga’ across the globe. In their endeavor they end up as nothing in common life. Their persistent stride for excellence includes many tiring hours of practice. Unlike in cricket, tennis and the popular sports, other sports personalities are in such a bad state that we admonish ourselves on hearing news about such pathetic instances. In a country that has held the Asiad and the Common Wealth Games (the latter is also remembered for a huge mess) this is sheer disgrace.

The recent story is of our ace archer in 2007 from Pathmada village in the Jamshedpur district of Jharkhand. Nisha Rani (21) is the archer who has brought fame to the nation by winning the silver medal in the South Asian Championship held in Jharkhand and was part of the bronze-winning team in Bangkok Grand Prix in 2006. She also bagged the Best Player Award in the Asian Grand Prix in Taiwan in 2007. Such a stature of a sports legend lives in oblivion due to negligence of the concerned. Her poverty has driven this young lady, who has abstained from getting into wedlock to concentrate on her career, to the brinks. She recently sold her bow, a prideful possession worth Rs 4 Lakhs for a mere Rs. 50,000 only.

Despite her grave situation, Nisha is still anticipating aid from the government to bounce back in her career. This is her sole objective. Wishesh appreciates this young archer and hopes that good days will shine on her anticipation and achievements. (With inputs from internet- AarKay)
