It does sound a little silly for an event organized by Guinness to not be allowed to serve booze, isn't it?

However, if the Guinness International Champions Cup soccer match between Manchester United and Real Madrid were to be played today at Michigan Stadium, spectators would have had to forego their booze.

Luckily for soccer fans and hose who enjoy a pint every now and then, the match isn’t until August 2. And Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon hopes that the stadium will have a temporary liquor license by then.

“On Friday, Brandon – along with tournament organizers and representatives from the European soccer powers – announced that Michigan Stadium would host the two clubs as part of the eight-team tournament, which will feature games in 12 U.S. cities. Brandon said the University has applied to the Michigan state legislature for a one-day liquor license similar to the one it was granted for the 2014 NHL Winter Classic,” reports Mlive.

He said the success of the Winter Classic works in favor of booze being sold at the Big House for the game, but that nothing has been approved, yet.

“We have applied for a special liquor license much as we did for the Winter Classic and that’s still an activity that’s in process because that requires state approval,” Brandon said on Friday. “So we’ve made that application and we think that it’s making progress because of the success of the Winter Classic, but until that process is completed that would be a to be determined issue.”

Brandon said he expects to know if the license will be approved soon.
