Mackinac Island is not the only island in Michigan as there are several islands around the state that offer relaxation and beautiful views.
The Charity Island Saginaw Bay is one of those best holiday islands in Michigan and it is owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after the Wiltses sold land to the federal agency in 1997.
It is the largest island in the Saginaw Bay and like many other islands, the only way to visit is via boat. It is a 222 acres island roughly 3 miles of shoreline. It is located about 10 miles from the mainland of Arenac County.
The lighthouse was built in 1857 to mark the shoals at the entrance to Saginaw Bay from Lake Huron. The lighthouse has not been operational since 1939.
Karen and Bob Wiltse, who own the home located next to Charity Island Lighthouse, are hoping restoration of the historic structure is in the future. The couple is behind recent fund-raising efforts aimed at bankrolling the lighthouse rehabilitation.
"Ownership of Charity Island changed several times over the years, and the keeper's house had deteriorated so badly by 2003 that it was demolished by the current owner and replaced by a new private structure."
To visit the island a person will need to board a boat. For $94 per person, you can get a ride to the island, a tour, and a meal if you book a seasonal Charity Island Dinner Cruise. Attendees will also receive appetizers and beverages on the way to the island, a tour of the lighthouse and dessert on the return ride.
The island also provides a place to rest. You can bring up to five friends, as this cottage has room for six.
The night stay at the lodges costs $250, with a 3-night minimum.
