The Board of Control for Cricket in India, known as BCCI, has chosen not to hold the usual opening ceremony for IPL 2026 to honor the eleven individuals who lost their lives in the stampede tragedy in Bengaluru. The first game of IPL 2026 will feature Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday. There will be no festivities before the match. Nonetheless, as reported by Times Of India, the IPL governing council is planning an extravagant closing ceremony on May 31. "Because of last year's unfortunate event on June 4, there will not be any official event on the opening day of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru. The BCCI is refraining from hosting any cultural or entertainment events to honor those who passed away in that tragedy on June 4, 2025. " However, BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are organizing a large entertainment event for the IPL closing on the final day, which is May 31," stated BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in comments to Times Of India.

In 2025, the opening ceremony took place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, showcasing performances by Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, singers Shreya Ghoshal and Karan Aujla, and an exciting dance act by actress Disha Patani.

Previously, a group led by Aditya Birla Group finished buying the franchise for Rs 16,660 crore, expressing satisfaction that their Rs 450 crore investment has significantly appreciated over time. Bolt Ventures and Blackstone's ongoing private equity strategy are also part of this group that has jointly purchased the franchise, making RCB the most expensive franchise ever in the history of the Indian Premier League. With the new ownership model, Aryaman Vikram Birla, a Director at Aditya Birla Group, will take on the position of Chairman, while Satyan Gajwani from Times Internet Limited will become the Vice Chairman. The group also includes David Blitzer, who founded Bolt Ventures, and Viral Patel, the CEO of BXPE.
